SUMMARY:Sohyun Ahn\, Piano Solo & 4 Hands
DESCRIPTION:Sohyun Ahn\, Piano Solo & 4-HandsDate and Time: Friday\, August 25\, 2023; 7 PM. No intermission.\nLocation: Island Arts Center red barn\, 1127 US Rt 2\, North Hero\, VT 05474\nTickets: $25.00 online or at the door. \nNew York City concert pianist Sohyun Ahn returns to Island Arts with a beautiful program for our community. Her well-attended concert last season elicited raves\, including “outstanding”\, “amazing delicacy”\, and “world class”. \nThe program showcases Sohyun Ahn playing solo piano works–the Beethoven “Moonlight Sonata“\, Six Pieces for Piano by Brahms \, and the Valses nobles et sentimentales by Maurice Ravel which blend Impressionist and Modernist themes. \nLocal Vermont pianist Eun Hee Park will join Ahn to play the piano 4-hands Dolly Suite by French composer Gabriel Fauré. It’s always a special treat to hear and watch the interaction of four hands sharing the keyboard. \nDescribed as “an absolute master” by the New York Concert Review\, and an “amazing pianist” by the Classical New Jersey Society\, our Vermont audience raved last year: “Absolutely superb”. “I was enthralled”. “Their fingers danced on the keyboard”\,  “Such a different experience from the big city hall where you are miles from the performer”. \nAhn is not to be missed. From the liner notes for Ahn’s  Bach Goldberg Variations: “Her playing exhibits a crystalline clarity\, insightful nuance\, and dynamic breadth.” From Piano Music Magazine\, Korea: “Such a gifted virtuoso\, wonderful performing the emotional storm … with the perfectly balanced elegance.” https://www.facebook.com/sohyunthepianist/ \nGet TicketsBACK TO ALL EVENTS

SUMMARY:Yang Bao and Kenneth Renshaw
DESCRIPTION:Yang Bao & Kenneth Renshaw\, Piano & ViolinDate and Time: Thursday\, June 22\, 2023; 7-8:30 PM with intermission.\nLocation: Island Arts Center\, 1127 US Rt 2\, North Hero\, VT 05474\nTickets: Free event. Registration is suggested. \nCome enjoy a concert of piano favorites with Yang Bao\, accompanied by renowned violinist Kenneth Renshaw. All are welcome to join us at this concert in celebration of the life of Bob Foley\, long time Island Arts supporter. The program will include some of Bob Foley’s favorites by Beethoven\, Mozart\, Rachmaninoff\, and Schubert. \nYang Bao’s association with Island Arts began back in 2014 while he was still an undergraduate piano student at the New England Conservatory of Music. He continued to appear with Island Arts for six seasons. \nIt is thanks to Bob Foley and his wife Priscilla Rose\, who recruited Yang Bao and underwrote those early concerts\, that classical music is now a popular feature of Island Arts’ annual events calendar. The Priscilla Rose Talent Scholarship was created by Bob Foley in his wife’s name. He provided an endowment so this scholarship could continue as a valuable resource for Grand Isle youth to study in the arts. \nYang Bao is now a cross-disciplinary artist\, composer\, and pianist based in\nNew York\, classically trained in piano performance at The Juilliard School and New England Conservatory of Music. He frequently performs at prestigious venues including Kimmel Center in Philadelphia\, Lincoln Center in New York\, Jordan Hall in Boston\, and Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. His recent concerts include the Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 with China Philharmonic Orchestra in their Spring 2022 Concert Season. \nBao’s multi-media works create an experiential “synthesis of the arts” that is precise in texture while hypnotizing in motion. Inspired by classical music and post-human minimalism\, his sensory-based “physical music” condenses complex emotions into poetic fables. Further enhanced by film and installation\, Bao’s works materialize the intangible music into ever-morphing sonic monuments. https://www.yangbaostudio.com/ \nKenneth Renshaw gained international attention in 2012 after winning First Prize at the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. He has performed as soloist with major orchestras including the Belgian National Orchestra\, the China Philharmonic Orchestra\, and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra\, and in recitals at venues such as the Louvre Museum and the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad. He has collaborated with pianist Leon Fleisher\, violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pamela Frank\, and violist Kim Kashkashian\, among others. He also enjoys pre-60s jazz and plays with a West Coast band\, The Hot Clams. \nPassionate about teaching\, Renshaw is Teaching Assistant to Perlman and Li Lin at The Juilliard School. His private students have won prizes and been admitted to major conservatories including Juilliard and New England Conservatory. Renshaw holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Juilliard.  https://www.kennethrenshawviolin.com/ \nReserve NowBACK TO ALL EVENTS

SUMMARY:The Dixie Six
DESCRIPTION:The Dixie SixDate: Saturday\, August 27\, 2022; 6:30 pm; picnic on the green starting at 5:30 pm\, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather\, this outside concert will be cancelled.\nLocation: Island Arts Center\, 1127 U.S. Rte. 2\, North Hero\nTickets: $10 online and at the door. Chairs or blankets are suggested. \nVermont’s Dixie Six is a band well-loved by Island Arts’ audiences\, and the group is well-known in the greater Burlington music scene. These six Vermont musicians focus on the sound and repertoire of Louis Armstrong’s All Stars of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The All Stars are famous for hits such as “Blueberry Hill\,” “Mack the Knife\,” and “Hello\, Dolly!” which blew “the Beatles off the top of pop charts at the height of Beatlemania.” This lively jazz still thrills\, appealing to all ages. \nThe Dixie Six players will be Charlie MacFayden\, piano; Peter Williams\, bass; Dave Whittle\, drums; Phil Mead\, trombone; Tony Pietricola\, clarinet; and Bill Wicker on the cornet. Though retaining a traditional Dixie feel\, band’s updated rhythm section gives a new energy to New Orleans classics and mid-century standards. \n“Thanks to Island Arts for inviting us to play. We hope you enjoy the music as much as we enjoy playing it for you.”\n~ The Dixie Six \nTICKETS BACK TO ALL EVENTS

SUMMARY:Flores Argentinas
DESCRIPTION:Flores ArgentinasDate and Time: Thursday\, August 25\, 2022; 7-9 PM\nLocation: Island Arts Center\, 1127 US Rt 2\, North Hero\, VT 05474\nTickets: $25 \nSoprano Sarah Cullins and classical guitarist Daniel Gaviria—whose 8 Cuerdas performance stunned a sell-out house last season—return in a new program. \nSharing the stage is the ensemble Duo Dolce—Vermont Symphony Orchestra principal cellist John Dunlop and violinist Laura Markowitz. The foursome will  treat us to music by a variety of Argentine and other South American composers\, performed with various combinations of their instruments. A unique concert! \n“The pairing of these two particular instruments presents timbres not heard in tandem as frequently as\, say\, violin and piano. It’s a gorgeous sound — and wonderful piece of music\, with each part doing its own thing while also sticking tightly together.” So comments WQXR’s James Bennett on the pairing of cello and guitar in the work by Gnattalli that appears on this program: \nMORE… Cullins comments that the performers “will do some pieces together and in combinations\, but mostly perform as Duos who approach this folk\, jazz\, or traditional music- inspired classical repertoire” in our own way.  At times melancholy\, passionate\, tragic\, playful\, or romantic\, this music is “sure to move you and get you moving”. \n“Flores Argentinas”\, taking its name from the beautiful song cycle by Carlos Guastavino\, offers music by Argentinean composers\, including some fiery tangos. “Works by Piazzolla and Guastavino are joined by works of neighboring-country composers such as Gerardo Rodriguez from Uruguay and Brazilian favorite\, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Traditional Argentinean pieces may be new to Vermont audiences. We think they will LOVE them!” \nThe program will close with the exquisite Cantelina from Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasieras #5 for soprano\, and here performed with both cello and guitar.  Not to be missed. \nJohn Dunlop and Laura MarkowitzPhoto of Dunlop & Markowitz courtesy of Bear Cieri.\nGET TICKETSBACK TO ALL EVENTS
