This year you will hear music by George Gershwin\, Duke Ellington\, Irving Berlin\, Rodgers & Hart\, Lerner & Loewe\, and Matt Dennis. And music by Cole Porter\, Leonard Bernstein\, Johnny Mercer\, and others––some well-known\, some not-so-well-known. \nHaiduck and Heckendorn have performed and recorded together for many years in the New York City area. Clarinetist Neal Haiduck has played jazz and classical music in New York City\, Montréal\, London\, Europe\, South America\, and Japan. He now makes his home in Burlington\, where he makes the lively jazz scene. \nPianist David Heckendorn was the orchestrator for “Mr. Holland’s Opus.” His compositions have been performed in various American venues\, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Birdland in New York City\, and in Europe and East Europe. He lives in Ulster County\, New York. \nGET TICKETSBACK TO ALL EVENTS

SUMMARY:The Dixie Six
DESCRIPTION:The Dixie SixDate: Sunday August 11\, 2024\, 6:00 pm; This concert will be held inside the barn due to weather.\nBring your picnic for 5:30pm or just come for the music!\nLocation: Island Arts Center\, 1127 U.S. Rte. 2\, North Hero\nTickets: $15 online and at the door. Chairs are available. \nVermont’s Dixie Six is a band well-loved by Island Arts’ audiences\, and the group is well-known in the greater Burlington music scene. These six Vermont musicians focus on the sound and repertoire of Louis Armstrong’s All Stars of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The All Stars are famous for hits such as “Blueberry Hill\,” “Mack the Knife\,” and “Hello\, Dolly!” which blew “the Beatles off the top of pop charts at the height of Beatlemania.” This lively jazz still thrills\, appealing to all ages. Though retaining a traditional Dixie feel\, band’s updated rhythm section gives a new energy to New Orleans classics and mid-century standards. \n“Thanks to Island Arts for inviting us to play. We hope you enjoy the music as much as we enjoy playing it for you.”\n~ The Dixie Six \nListen to a recent performance: \nTICKETS BACK TO ALL EVENTS

SUMMARY:End of Season Book Sale 2023
DESCRIPTION:End of Season Book Sale\nDate & Time: Saturday & Sunday\, October 7-8\, 2023; 10 AM to 4 PM\nMeet the Author: Sunday\, October 8; Lenny Levine writer\, studio singer\, and composer of many successful jingles\nLocation: Island Arts Center (barn)\, 1127 U.S. Rte. 2\, North Hero\, VT 05474\nTickets: Free admission. Books by donation. \nThis two-day book sale is a stop on 2023 “Weekend in the Islands” adventure map. More than 4\,000 books cater to every taste. All books are organized by subject for your easy discovery. There are paperbacks\, hard-covers\, and some beautiful books to display. The subjects are varied and include Fiction\, Mysteries\, History\, Travel\, Cooking\, Psychology\, True Stories\, Biographies\, and more. Browse at your leisure in the airy space that is the Island Arts Center barn. \nAbout Lenny Levine: \nLenny Levine was born and raised in Brooklyn\, NY\, and his soul has never left. Before turning to fiction writing\, he enjoyed a twenty-year career as a studio singer and composer of many successful jingles such as McDonald’s\, Lipton Tea\, and Jeep. He has written songs for Diana Ross\, the Pointer Sisters\, and Barry Manilow and sung backup for Billy Joel\, Peggy Lee\, Carly Simon\, and others. \nHis short stories have been widely published in literary magazines and journals\, and he received a Pushcart Prize nomination for short fiction. Diehard Fan is his third novel. \nReviews \n“The ingredients all work to deliver a compelling\, entertaining novel. The author builds the suspense masterfully\, combining the diverse plot elements – baseball\, a young boy’s coming-of-age story\, a murder mystery\, 1950’s nostalgia and a suspenseful subplot – into a compelling story. Give Diehard Fan a whirl; you’ll enjoy it.”—Baseball Books for Baseball People \n“A well written and well constructed thriller with the end of the 1951 National League baseball season as much more than just background. Although baseball and Brooklyn enthusiasts will eat up the nostalgia\, mystery buffs of all kinds\, baseball fans or not\, will thoroughly enjoy and be totally wrapped up in the intrigue.\nForgive the word play\, but throughout the novel\, the author constantly throws us “curves\, sliders and even an occasional “screwball” with masterful “changes of pace!” Highly recommended reading!”—Goodreads \nBrief Synopsis from Diehard Fan \nEddie Fein is a twelve-year-old boy living in Brooklyn. It’s the last week of the 1951 baseball season\, and his beloved Dodgers are enduring the epic collapse to the hated Giants that will be punctuated by Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard ’round the world.”\nEddie’s love for the Dodgers springs from his love for his father Barry Fein\, a passionate Dodger fan\, but an alcoholic who’s prone to bouts of depression and anger.\nWhen two Giant fans are murdered\, Nick DiFazio\, lead detective on the case and Barry’s best friend\, is afraid of what his suspicions are telling him.\nEddie somehow learns of Nick’s feelings. He secretly embarks on a desperate mission to prove his father’s innocence\, a quest that only seems to worsen things.\nIn the meantime\, and throughout\, we witness the Dodgers’ final week\, sometimes through radio and TV\, sometimes from the playing field itself.\nAnd as Bobby Thomson crushes Ralph Branca’s fastball into baseball history\, Eddie will face the terrifying truth. \nIsland Arts book sale. SUMMARY:Sohyun Ahn\, Piano Solo & 4 Hands
DESCRIPTION:Sohyun Ahn\, Piano Solo & 4-HandsDate and Time: Friday\, August 25\, 2023; 7 PM. No intermission.\nLocation: Island Arts Center red barn\, 1127 US Rt 2\, North Hero\, VT 05474\nTickets: $25.00 online or at the door. \nNew York City concert pianist Sohyun Ahn returns to Island Arts with a beautiful program for our community. Her well-attended concert last season elicited raves\, including “outstanding”\, “amazing delicacy”\, and “world class”. \nThe program showcases Sohyun Ahn playing solo piano works–the Beethoven “Moonlight Sonata“\, Six Pieces for Piano by Brahms \, and the Valses nobles et sentimentales by Maurice Ravel which blend Impressionist and Modernist themes. \nLocal Vermont pianist Eun Hee Park will join Ahn to play the piano 4-hands Dolly Suite by French composer Gabriel Fauré. It’s always a special treat to hear and watch the interaction of four hands sharing the keyboard. \nDescribed as “an absolute master” by the New York Concert Review\, and an “amazing pianist” by the Classical New Jersey Society\, our Vermont audience raved last year: “Absolutely superb”. “I was enthralled”. “Their fingers danced on the keyboard”\,  “Such a different experience from the big city hall where you are miles from the performer”. \nAhn is not to be missed. From the liner notes for Ahn’s  Bach Goldberg Variations: “Her playing exhibits a crystalline clarity\, insightful nuance\, and dynamic breadth.” From Piano Music Magazine\, Korea: “Such a gifted virtuoso\, wonderful performing the emotional storm … with the perfectly balanced elegance.” https://www.facebook.com/sohyunthepianist/ \nGet TicketsBACK TO ALL EVENTS
