About the Island Arts Center Barn

The Barn was built at the end of the 19th century on the Homer Knight dairy farm in North Hero. One hundred years later Anne M. August, an artist and summer resident of North Hero, had the vision to transform the crumbling barn into a space for artists and educators to offer exhibits and events for community enrichment and enjoyment.

On July 1, 2014, Anne August donated the Barn to Island Arts at a ribbon-cutting celebration attended by state and local representatives, and the many friends of Island Arts.

As the Island Arts Center since 2014, the historic Barn has already hosted many events and classes. Our goal is a central, year-round home for the visual, literary, and performing arts of Grand Isle County, an intergenerational creative space available for our school children, families, seniors, and community organizers. Catch up with barn progress in Barn News.

With many farms disappearing from Vermont, the people of the Champlain Islands can drive by the Island Arts Center Barn and admire its simple beauty and architecture. Though the cows and hay have long since gone, the memories of Vermont’s past resonate within the rafters of this awe-inspiring space. During the performance season, the Barn resonates with life, the laughter of young and old, and a myriad of events, classes, music, dance, theater—a true Celebration of the Arts!
